A Perception on the professional nursing image of the nuuse college students : Q-methodological approach

Applying Q-methodology, this research analyses the image style of the nurse college students to get the data for the nursing education about the nursing professional. The research was between 1998. 8. 13 and 1998. 10. 5 with 35 students of the C-nurse college second and third grade. We gather 148 Q-statement cards and use 39 items of them. Analysis of Q-type obtained by QUANL pc program. As the result of the research, there are three styles about the nursing professional image of the student. The first type is the value-complexed style : students have conflict about the nursing as a professional, and recognize the outside viewpoint and the influence of the environment factors about the nurse as negative and skeptical. The second type is the proud style : their image about the nurse and the nursing is very positive and they try to develop the professional knowledge continuously and think of the nature of the nursing as important. The third type is in search for the profession : their perception of the nursing as a profession is very high but they have a negative viewpoint about the nurse because of the lack of the professional pride and the endeavor of the self-development. As the result of the research, the styles of the image about the nursing as a profession is available for the reconstruction of the attitude for the professional nursing and data for nursing education. We suggest the below according to the result of this research : 1. The strategic research to make the image of the nursing as a profession better has to be continuous. 2. It is necessary to compare the nurse college student with the nurse about the difference of the image of the nursing as a profession.
